Finger Puppets

These finger puppets will encourage imaginative play and give hours of pleasure. Once you’ve mastered the simple pattern for the basic body, and have tried the octopus and mouse, delight and amuse your children by devising your own creatures to add to the cast.

Materials

Oddments of 4ply (sport-weight) cotton yarn in sky blue (A), mid-blue (B) and cream (C)

Oddments of yarn for embroidering faces and whiskers

Pair of 3mm (US: 2) needles

Toy stuffing

Tapestry needle

Tension (gauge)

23 sts and 32 rows over 10cm (4in) square in st st on 3mm (US: 2) needles.

Basic body

Cast on 15 sts.

Knit 2 rows.

Starting with a knit row, cont in st st until work measures 6cm (2½in) from cast-on edge, ending with a WS row.* Shape top as follows:

Next row: (K1, k2tog) to end. (10 sts)

Next row: Purl.

Next row: (K2tog) to end. (5 sts) Break off yarn, thread through rem sts, pull tight and sew seam.
